James Roy Hopkins
James Roy Hopkins (1877–1969) was an American painter known for his refined portraiture and contributions to art education. Born in Irwin, Ohio, he initially studied electrical engineering at The Ohio State University before shifting to art, training at the Art Academy of Cincinnati under Frank Duveneck. In 1900, he moved to New York as a medical illustrator before continuing his studies at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where he associated with artists such as Renoir, Monet, and Degas. His time in France influenced his approach to light and form, evident in his portraits and figurative works. In 1904, he married printmaker Edna Boies, and the couple traveled widely before returning to Ohio in 1914.
Hopkins taught at the Cincinnati Academy of Art before becoming chair of the art department at Ohio State University in 1923, a position he held until 1947. While his academic career limited his artistic output, he remained highly regarded for his elegant nude studies and portraiture.
