Collection of Dr. Randal Williams

Dr. Williams began his collection in the early 1970s with the acquisition of a landscape painting from Marshall Fields in Chicago. This singular acquisition provided the spark for a life-long passion for the arts, which took off in earnest in the 1980s. Dr. William’s first major purchase was a painting by Victor Charreton, acquired from the Sternberg Gallery in Chicago. Having walked by the gallery at night, seeing this work illuminated in the window, Dr. Williams was captivated; his breath stolen. With time, the collection grew to include works by such acclaimed artists, Henri de la Sidaner, Paul de Longpré, James Hopkins, Hermon Atkins MacNeil, Harry Jackson, Fritz White, and Bob Robertson.

Throughout his collecting journey, Dr. Williams acquired with a connoisseur’s eye, seeking out exemplary works that spoke to notable themes within each artist’s oeuvre. Of particular note is Dr. William’s commitment to the oeuvre of Paul de Longpré, a French/American botanical artist, closely affiliated with the early days of Hollywood; Henri de la Sidaner, a French Intimist, best known for his depictions of French interiors as well as quiet streets and gardens; and Victor Charreton, a French post-impressionist best known for his vibrant Spring and subdued Winter landscapes.

Dr. Williams was a true steward for his art; assiduously building a collection which spoke, not only to the immense talent of these artists, but also to the true depth and breadth of their oeuvres and mastery of their respective mediums.
