Arcadia Art Consultancy is pleased to be offering a selection of works during Christie’s Asian Art Week on behalf of a Southeastern Collector.
The following works will be offered during the Arts of Asia Online Sale (22041), which runs from September 13 - 28th.
A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF TARA
TIBET, 15TH CENTURY
8 1⁄4 in. (21 cm.) high
The beautiful liberator, Green Tara, sits here in her classic pose, lalitasana, ready to swiftly come to the aid of her devotees. The present gilt-bronze figure is a large and elegant depiction, with features such as the jeweled string that rests across her thighs and the particularly ornate lotus blossoms at her shoulder evincing a masterly artisan. The graceful s-curve of her pose, the languidly pooled drapery and the inlays of turquoise all indicate the work was made in the fifteenth century at the height of Tibetan Buddhist art.
Literature: Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 25025.
Estimate: $6,000 - 8,000
Lot 18
A BRONZE FIGURE OF A WRATHFUL PROTECTOR
TIBET, 17TH CENTURY
9 1⁄2 in. (24.1 cm.) high
This charismatic bronze figure of a wrathful deity commands a mighty presence. A finely cast sculpture in a Tibeto-Chinese style, the wrathful deity strides in alidhasana, with the left leg bent at the knee and the right leg thrust to the side. The implement in his hands are now lost, thus obscuring the identity of this deity. He wears an animal pelt draped around his waist. His expression exudes power, like that of the Buddhist protector Mahakala, accentuated by bulging eyes and bared fangs. His flaming red hair is surmounted by a skull tiara. Compare the present lot to an 18th Tibetan bronze figure of Mahakala, sold at Christie’s New York 28 September 2022, lot 55, for $25,200. While the comparable work retains its original base, it is slightly smaller in scale and without stone inlays. Both works are similarly gilt and polychromed, which may have been a later addition to the works.
Literature: Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 25030.
Estimate: $6,000 - 8,000
Lot 23
A GILT-BRONZE VAJRA

4 1⁄8 in. (10.5 cm.) long
Literature: Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 25028.
Estimate: $3,000 - 5,000
Lot 21

Literature: Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 25033.
Estimate: $4,000 - 6,000
